Breakout Session V

Oils and Biodiesel

Yusuf Chisti

Yusuf Chisti is Professor of Biochemical Engineering at the Institute of Technology and Engineering, Massey University, New Zealand. Chisti holds a MSc (Biochemical Engineering) degree from University of London, England, and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from University of Waterloo, Canada. His research areas include photobioreactor engineering, mixotrophic and heterotrophic culture of microalgae for metabolites, bioactives and aquaculture, production and recovery of eicosapentaenoic acid, production and recovery of the neurotoxin domoic acid, use of microalgae for nitrogen and phosphorous removal from wastewater, abatement of atmospheric carbon dioxide using microalgae, economics of microalgal processes.

Chisti has nearly 200 publications including a highly cited book (Airlift Bioreactors, Elsevier, 1989). He has lectured at nearly 140 international events worldwide. His work addresses many aspects of biochemical and chemical engineering, applied biotechnology, and environmental technology.

Basil Nikolau

Basil Nikolau is a Professor in the Departments of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology and Food Science and Human Nutrition at Iowa State University. He also serves as the director of the Center for Metabolic Biology, and of the W.M. Keck Metabolomics Research Laboratory. These entities foster and support multidisciplinary research for deciphering the structure of metabolic networks and how they are regulated. His proficiency is in integrating biochemistry, genomics, molecular biology and bioinformatics to characterize enzymes and genes involved in novel metabolic networks. His research interests are focused on integrating fundamental research, which offer metabolic solutions for industrial, bioenergy and nutritional applications.
